Why I Started Making Vlogs

Why I Started Making Vlogs

According to a website that counts words on other websites, I’ve written hundreds of thousands of words on this blog since 2006. Writing that much takes a lot of resources — research, writing, editing, and everything in between.

The Benefits of Writing

There are two major benefits I’ve gotten from writing consistently. First, writing gives me a chance to reflect on myself — it’s how I’ve developed and shaped my own character. Second, writing has helped me learn how to present ideas coherently so other people can actually follow them.

Writing Opens Doors

Through writing, I’ve landed fantastic opportunities I never would have gotten otherwise. By writing about what you know in a particular field, you build authority — a reputation — for yourself.

Getting Into Video

Indonesians don’t like reading. But YouTube Indonesia gets hundreds of millions of visitors who watch videos billions of times.

In September 2016, I tried making a simple vlog — documenting a day I spent working entirely away from the computer. I shot bits of the Bandung–Lembang drive, working at a café on Jl. Dago, and the ride home. After uploading it to my YouTube channel, I felt relieved.

Not Trying to Become a Vlogger

Like starting this blog 11 years ago — I never set out to become a blogger. After publishing a few vlogs, I realized I’m not the daily-vlog type. My days are mostly spent reading and thinking. I stopped making activity-based vlogs and realized I don’t have to do it like everyone else.

My plan is simple: make vlogs. Subscribe to my YouTube channel here.
