I’ve been creating WordPress websites since 2006. At one point it was my full-time job, and many other times it’s been my side hustle. I started with WordPress.com, then eventually moved to self-hosted sites.
Over the years, WordPress has grown into a full-fledged content management system that’s highly customizable. And self-hosting is what makes all of that possible.
I’ve mostly used DreamHost and have been with them for almost 20 years, since I built my first WordPress site. It’s very affordable and it allowed me to start a web design business back in 2008 with relatively low fixed expenses.
However, recently two of my client sites got hacked. And unfortunately for me, there was no way to recover them. That got me seriously thinking about something I’d never really considered before: moving all my websites to a different hosting provider that could better protect client sites from attacks. As we all know, hackers are getting smarter, more sophisticated, and relentless.
So I started researching the most reliable WordPress hosting out there. It didn’t take long before I came across Automattic, the company behind WordPress, which offers several hosting options that include their powerful Jetpack suite. One of them is called Pressable.
Price-wise, it’s higher than shared hosting, and probably even more than some VPS options. Which may offer more freedom (and more headaches). But peace of mind is something I can’t ignore, especially since this is a side hustle (at least for now).
So yes, I decided to switch hosting providers. I plan to document parts of the migration process on this blog, so expect more posts about this topic.
In the meantime, goodbye DreamHost. It was nice, but I have to move on.
Hello, Pressable!
